A HEALTHY SPINE ACTS AS A SPRING
Your discs are like cushions that separate the vertebrae from each other and keep them in place. The core of the disc consists of a watery gel that provides spring, shock-absorption and flexibility as long as it is hydrated. Healthy discs are thick and flexible, like resilient moist sponges, and provide for fluid movement, good posture and wide range of motion.
Gravity forces your vertebrae to put pressure on discs, and causes moisture to be squeezed out. With constant pressure over time they become starved of water that should bring oxygen and nutrients and remove waste materials. Unhealthy discs are stiff, flat, hard and inflexible, like flattened dry sponges. They cause loss of height, poor posture, inflexibility and pain.
Through the course of a normal day we can lose up to 2 cm in height as discs flatten. During sleep they regenerate. There is also a cumulative effect, which means that over time we can lose to 5 cm in height. Certain sports and exercises like running, aerobics and weight training, intensify compression. Inversion helps re-align the spine and keeps you performing at higher levels for longer.
Inversion provides natural traction using your body weight. As the spine gently extends, spaces between the vertebrae widen and give discs space to absorb moisture. Like sponges, they expand and regenerate. A study has recorded benefit within within the first 10 seconds of inversion.
Free of gravity, astronauts in space gain up to 5 cm in height as discs regenerate. Inverting for 3 - 5 minutes a day has the same effect.
